Week 8 in MR

On Tuesday we were lucky to have some students from Aotea College come into our classroom and do some activities with us. In the morning they read to us and played maths games with us. After morning tea they did some art with us. We had to write the first letter of our name and then decorate the page with pictures of things we liked.

On Tuesday we also got to enter the COSMODOME! Some of us were a little nervous going inside but we loved it when we were in there. When we came back we wrote some awesome stories without any help from Miss Rowe. We have also been doing some art for Matariki. On Wednesday with Mrs Berney we made some star constellations.  We made different pictures in the sky.

On Thursday and Friday we also made some stars for Matariki. They turned out awesome! To finish our picture off Miss Rowe took photos off us lying on the floor so that in our pictures we are gazing up at the stars.

We carried on learning our Maori words this week. We had to listen to Miss Rowe say the Maori word and then we had to draw the picture of what it is in the box.  We are starting to remember these words now!

We have had a big focus on 'time' for Maths this term. We have been learning to read the clock. We know different times. We have learned about O’Clock times, half past times and quarter times.

On Friday MR Class hosted whole school assembly. We had four wonderful hosts Annelise, Benny, Yvonne and Yogesh. They did such a fabulous job! We got to share our zentangle artwork at assembly too!

Week 7 in MR Class

This week we had a go at doing some “Zentangle” artwork! Zentangle is a very unique type of art. It is really cool because it is so effective and they all look completely different! All you need is white paper and a black sharpie or vivid. Check out some of our birds:

We learned some new Maori words about our topic ‘Celebrations’ The words we were taught were poihou (balloon), rᾱ whanau (birthday), kᾱri (card), Koha (gift/present), keke (cake), Kᾱnara (candles) and rare (lollies).

This week we continued to learn about the 6 thinking hats. We know that the green hat is all about creativity. We need to think of new ideas and new possibilities when we put on our green hat. We know that the red hat is all about feelings. Check out some of the activities that we did:

We did some writing about celebrations. We wrote about our favourite celebration and why it is our favourite. This is what Vanessa wrote:
Guess what? My favourite celebration is Easter because I like Easter because the Easter bunny will hide the eggs. When it’s the morning we have to find the eggs. I am so happy because I like Easter lots.

On Friday we read a fish poem with Mrs McVicar. After we read the poem we got to make our own fish by colouring in popsicle sticks and gluing them onto paper. We decorated our fish and gave them a googly eye! Take a look:

Week 6 in MR Class

This week we have been looking at the black and yellow thinking hats! We know that the black thinking hat is used for identifying things that are wrong about something. It is acknowledging the bad points and weaknesses of something. We also now know that the yellow hat is thinking about all the good things and the benefits. We did a couple of activities to help us understand these thinking hats!

In writing this week we have been focussing on making a report. First we had to understand what a report is and how to write it. Miss Rowe made a paper hamburger to help us get a good idea of what a report is. In the first layer of the burger we needed a sentence to introduce the topic. In the second, third and fourth layers we needed to add in some detail about a topic. In the last layer of the burger we had to make a conclusion. Our topic was 'frogs'. We published our reports and made a paper frog by reading a book and following instructions! Check out some of our reports about frogs!

This week two of our reading groups performed a play to the class. They were learning to use expression when they are reading and to pretend that they are a different character. After the plays were performed we discussed what worked well and what didn't work so well. They all did such a fabulous job!

On Friday we had Discovery Time. Our theme was “Celebrations-Parties” to link in with our topic. This week our focus for discovery time was to 'catch somebody being good.' We talked about how this might look like people sharing, taking turns, helping others, being kind, saying compliments. Most people in the class caught lots of people being good! We called ourselves the 'Celebration Police.' The celebration police lets the teacher know all the good things that they notice about somebody else!

Week 5

This week in MR Class we started practising our ball skills. We started to learn how to bounce a ball using our finger tips. We had to learn to control the ball while we were bouncing it. We then practised our bounce passes. We will be continuing to practise large ball skills for the rest of the term.

More art! Check out the fabulous art work that we have been doing. We used crayons and dye to create these. We had to crinkle up the paper before we dyed them.

This week we have been looking at the letter 'Ff ' in handwriting. We need to stay on the line and make sure our letters face the correct way.

This week MR Class made 'Squiggle' stories. Miss Rowe put a little squiggle in our books and we had to make a picture out of our squiggle. We could turn it into anything that we wanted to. We then had to write about our picture. We wrote about plants, the sea, people, castles and lots more!
